Oprah Wimprey TV show

interview transcript

Oprah: Please welcome Madonna!!!!!

[Madonna comes out, DCFMA is playing, waves to the audience, applause]

Oprah: Thank you, I bet even when you hear it, when you hear the song does it give you shivers too?

Madonna: Don' Cry For Me?

O: Yes

M: Umm...Ummm..., I've heard it a lot

O: Yes, yes

M: Yeah, it's a great song

O: Even how when you still hear it though?

M: Yeah absolutely

O: Because most of Americas just hearing it for the first time, you doing it

M: Yeah

O: I understand you wrote a letter to the director, Alan, and you, a 4 page letter

M: Yes

O: Telling him this is a role you were born to play. What else did you say in that letter?

M: I said, umm... look I don't know if you'r heart is set on any actress, but in case you have not made your decision. I would like to uh, put a, I would like to get down on my knees and beg for the part, basically [Laughing]

M: No I just ,i-i don't really know, I mean, I was possesed while I was writting that letter. My hands-My hands were moving across the page and-and someone else was pushing it. And I basically said I would commit myself 100% to the part and that I would sing and dance and act my heart out, and I would do everything I could to bring her to life and make him proud and that absolutly no one could do the part as good as I did and umm... that's it.

O: And you know now, don't you think now when you see that film that I heard other people were considered for the part

M: yeah

O: I heard Merly Streep and Michelle Phiffer, we can't imagine anybody else playing Evita but you [applause]

O: Next we're gonna hear about the day Madonna thought she harmed her unborn baby 'cause she discovered while filming Evita that she was pregnant, but first check out Madonna beautiful new single You Must Love Me, from Evita.

****Commercial*****

O: She wrote In he diary about filming the incredible tango scene that we're about to show you. This is when you were afraid that something had happened, you had discovered that you were pregnant, of course. Tell us you knew for a long time, longer than you let us know.

M: I'll never tell [Laughing]

M: I had a, well, I had a suspicion but I was just, lets say I was in denial

O: Because it wasn't a convienent time to be pregnant.

M: Thats right

O: But you wanted to be pregnant?

M: Absolutely

O: Uh-Huh, then you get pregnant at the same time that you had this movie that you wanted to do for 7 years.

M: Right

O: And did you think not now God could you wait until the next 9 months.

M: At first I was a little bit shocked but then I thought, you know what, this is perfect because I'm getting - I'm getting two things that I wanted more tham anything at the same time. So- So it was meant to be and it's o.k.

O: Well the diary of umm...April 6 I think it was you said " I was winded after every take I had to lie on the couch every ten minutes so I could recover from dizzy spells, I was worried that I was shaking the baby around too much and that would injur it in some way. The second day I started getting a cramping feelings and I got worried so a comforting Indian doctor came to the set to examine me. When I could hear my babies heart beat I was instantly reassured.

M: Yup

O: Really

M: Thats when I was doing the scene in, when I'm, when I first come to Buenos Aires and Jimmy Nail brings me to umm... you know the club and I dance with all the guys.

O: Yeah, you still had brown hair

M: Yeah, when I still have brown hair [laughing]

M: umm...yeah that was then

O: Yeah, lets take a look at that scene and the tango. [show tango scene]

O: O.k. diary April 17th "Well the world knows" yup thats when it had all been announced "The worl knows and I fell like my insides had been ripped open. Some people had suggested that I done this" gotten pregnant "for shock value, these comments only a man would make. Because it's much to difficult to be pregnant and bring a child into this world to do it for provacative reasons" now I couldn't believe any one said that either [applause]

O: I thought a lot of people stood up and applauded for you, you couldn't hear us all when you said what you said about the tabloid uh.. television shows umm.. being outside your house and the Hard Copy and that. 'Cause wasn't that the most invasion

M: That made me sick, I have to say. Yeah I mean I accept it when I walk outside, when I go outside my gate, when I go into the world, you know go shopping, go to premires, what-ever. I don't like it but I accept it. Umm... but when I'm in my house and being filmed when I'm standing at the door to get the newspaper and I'm being filmed, I feel umm.. incredibley violated because I feel like there has to be one place in the world where, I have my privacy.

O: Now when I read that, I don't know if it's true, I read that the person, the photographer had used the next door neighbors house, I thought...

M: It wasn't next door it was three doors down that you know

O: because I thought wouldn't you be ticked off at your next door neighbor?

M: I am -I am [laughing]

M: Well, he lives up in a hill and they think he rented out his guest house and there was one tiny corner of a window where you could see right on to- my property and one of the windows and uh..and thats where they filmed. It's very far away but somehow they managed.

O: Get one of those zoom lenses

M: Yeah

O: You relied on you sister when your having the baby? Gave you all the baby books? M: Yeah, yes I worship my sister, she's the most perfect mother she really is, she taught me a lot.

O: and what was, and what has she taught you?

M: Patcience, I'm learning it as I go anyways, but I mean she's just so great with her son and he's incredible and umm... patience and surrender thats, Yeah

O: Madonn writes a lot about her dreams during the filming of Evita and the girl can dream, my God you can dream!

M: Yeah

O: O.k. the Sharon Stone dream, what was that about?

M: Umm...

O: She dreams about Sharon Stone

M: And Courtney Love, it was a dream together

O: So what was the dream? Sharon Stone invited you over and Courtney was there?

M: And Sharon Stone invited me over to her house and umm....

O: This is a dream now so lets tabloids get it straight

M: Yes, oh God

O: So you don't have it repeated and repeated, yeah

M: She invited me over to her house and I went to visit her and she was dressed very glamourously laying in a bath tub completly made up and I said wow [laughing] M: Wow, umm.... [M laughs] and umm...and then I thought she was trying to impress me but I wasn't really sure. I was confused when I went to her house why she had invited me and then the doorbell, then we heared a knock at the door and we heared Courtney Loves voice on the other side banging and saying 'open up I know you two are in there you better' and then I opened up and umm...and she had a gun and uhh... [laughing]

O: Courtney did?

M: Yeah, but the door was shut and she said 'You two better open up or I'm gonna shot you both' and then when I opened the door she laughed and said she was just kidding. [laughing]

O: Then you had a dream about your teeth falling out

M: Yes I have a lot of dreams

O: About your teeth falling out?

M: I do dream about that a lot I'm not sure what that means

O: It means something

M: It does, umm...I have a good dentist so [laughing]

M: I know its not that. I think it has something to do with, umm....teeth falling out, with death perhaps

O: Its not good whatever it is

M: No

O: Its not good

M: No

O: Well, were gonna be right back, but first watch this beautiful scene from Evita where Antonio Banderas and Madonna Entertain us with a spectacular waltz. I wanna talk about Antonio Banderas too because in Truth or Dare I remember you mentioning Antonio Banderas, I wanted to know if you still had that crush when you were doing this film.

M: Umm...oh I thought we were gonna do a commercial

O: we are but...

M: Oh [laughs]

O: We'll just talk about that when we come back

M: Oh, o.k.

O: We'll be right back, back in a minute

*****Commercial*****

O: That was a scene from Madonna's documentary Truth or Dare [applause]

O: Not having your mother, umm...growing up with you, you know of course effects anybody who grows up that way. You think, what impact do you think that will have on your mothering, you know there's this book about motherless daughters

M: Yeah I read it, it's a great book

O: Yeah

M: umm...Well, all I can say is that when I look into my daughters eyes right now, umm...I feel like, I feel that I am being healed

O: Really?

M: Mmm..hmm, yeah it's an incredible umm... because I didn't have a mother that I could grow up looking into the eyes of, I couldn't recognize myself in her, I couldn't see my self in her. So now I look into my daughters eyes and I see that recognition and it is so extrodinary, that feeling I think that, it is going to heal a lot of the pain that I felt growing up with out a mother, umm...and because I didn't have that sort of mothering its going to, I mean I feel very inspired, compeled, motivated whatever to give my daughter everything my mother couldn't give me.

O: So you had that moment.... [applause] ...You had that moment where, I saw your daughter she's beautiful

M: Thank you

O: Beautiful brown haired baby, wearing the prettiest-prettiest little lace dress with a little pearl bracelet and everything [awww] But she not coming out, she's not coming out

M: Dolce and Gabbana [Laughing]

O: Is it really?

M: Yeah

O: I know the baby will be dressed

M: Yeah

O: The baby will be dressed [laughing]

O: but have you had that moment though where she looks at you with that recognition?

M: Oh my God, it's the most incredible thing in the world. I was not prepared for how great that was going to feel

O: Really?

M: Yeah

O: And it feels like being healed

M: Yeah

O: What is the thing you most want to teach her, when you say...

M: Self respect, yeah O:

What will you teach her about men? [laughing]

M: Well, I think that if you learn self respect, you don't need to be taught about men [applause]

O: Good answer! Good answer girl! Madonna's character in Evita, Eva Peron dies of cancer and whil filming those scenes Madonna thought how her own mother must have felt when she was told that she was dying. We must say, those of us who have seen the film and the rest of you who i'm sure are goning to be goingout to see the film, and let me just say this, audience we need to tell America that oridarily its not the kind of film you would want to go see because you'll say it's all singing. But it is brillantly done, brillantly done [applause] ...Thats why you should see it, its just because, I felt the same way I said, its two hours and their singing? [laughing] ...But when I said this to Madonna during a commercial break, i'll say this to you all when I saw her performance and Jonathan Price and Antonio Banderas but particularly your performance I said when you see somebody who can do something with that kind of excellence, it makes you want to do better. You look at it and you say, I'm gonna be better in my life. You know what I'm saying? I think thats what art is inspirational.

M: Absolutely

O: And that is what you did in this film, if you never do another film [applause]

M: Thank you

O: It's true. If you never do another thing [applause] ...And umm... the scene that will take you out is the scene where Eva Peron is in the bed dying and is told by umm... Jonathan Price told by her husband that she is dying and you say "Yesterday was a real cry fest, I spent the entire day horizontal in a hospital bed being told that I have cancer. I kept thinking about how my mother must have felt when my father, when he told her she was dying and how she stayed so cheerful and never gave into her sadness even in the end, this brought on floods of tears the entire day." So is that what your thinking about during that scene?

M: Yeah, yeah absolutely, and not just her but also how I would feel if someone came to me and said those very same words.

O: Was it in a dream also that you had while you were pregnant where you were at the foot of your mother and you were asking her

M: To tell me what my fate was and she died before she answered me.

O: And mothers days always hard for you

M: Very depresing, yeah

O: What happened thought this mothers day?

M: Oh, [laughs] well umm... my baby kicked me for the first time [awwww, applause]

O: But you know its a kick, you know its not indigestion or....

M: No no no it was a kick

O: you know its a kick?

M: no it was a kick, it was like a line backer kick, you know what I mean?

O: So you were feeling sad, you were depressed thinking about your own mother

M: I was, yes I was feeling melancholy, and I we were shooting a scene and in the middle of the scene I was kicked and I had to try my hardest to not register it but I was over joyed because when you feel a baby kicking inside you its the first time that you really know somethings growing in you. So it was a great moment

O: That's a gift

M: My mothers day present

O: It was a gift

M: My first mothers day present [applause]

O: Whats was umm... what was the hardest part about being pregnant? but did you have a lot of morning sickness?

M: No, not really a couple times

O: naucious, dizzy

M: thats it [noise from the audience - M laughs]

O: Yeah we saw that shot all ready

M: You had to do it

O: Yes, yes we had to [talking about the picture of Madonna exercising in the background]

O: I read about you sleeping on your stomach, I felt so scared, you were sleeping on your stomach, you've always slept on your stomach

M: Yup

O: And you thought that sleeping on your stomach once you were pregnant would smash the babies nose. [laughing] ...Because its like right there, and so you were trying to sleep on your side

M: Trained my self to sleep on my back or on my side

O: Do they tell you that? you can't sleep on your stomach?

M: They don't tell you but eventually you just can't [laughing] ...You kinda like you know if you sleep on your stomach, your arms and your legs don't touch the bed [laughing]

O: Did you, did you in anyway resent having to give up your waist line? or did you think about that am I ever gonna get my shape back? after all you are Madonna [yells from audience]

M: Umm... I had tinges of umm... I don't know what the word is but I did think Oh God, Oh God its gonna be really hard getting my waist line back after but you know

O: Doesn't look like it was hard at all

M: It came back [laughs]

O: When we come back, what does Madonna have to say about Uh-oh Dennis Rodman [applause and screams] don't you wanna know, who included a chapter on sex with Madonna in his recent book. But first take a look at another brillant scene, brillant, thats what it is brillant from Madonna's new movie Evita.

****Commercial****

O: Have you read Dennis Rodmans book?

M: Ummm... I had heared that he hade done a book but I had no idea that he was going to devote a chapter

O: I had interviewed him

M: A fictional chapter, really

O: I interviewed him and he said that he had tried to reach you and to tell you about that he was gonna be doing that, but thats not true?

M: No, and even if he had tried to reach me to tell me that he was gonna do it what difference would that have made? It wasn't like he was asking me if it was o.k., he was just gonna tell me he was doing it.

O: So what do you want to say about that? [noise from audience]

M: You know I don't have any respect for a man who kisses and tells, I, I mean [applause]

M: And

O: Now and you say first of all it isn't true and he wrote it and your saying that what he says about what happened, actually I read that you said, you know there was this line that you were in a bad porn movie so its not something that you would have even had said. So you think did he just made the whole thing up.

M: I think someone wrote the book for him, I mean I think someone did it with him and I'm sure he was like o.k. you know I'm sure he sort of made stuff up together, you know.

O: They said tell us anything you can about Madonna

M: Yeah exactly I mean listen

O: Let me ask you this though, what attracted him to you? in the first place, you to him, what was it about him that you said you know I want this man. Or was there anything about him that

M: Well, I..... [laughing]

O: No in retrospect you know

M: O.k. umm...I think I admired him because he was an outspoken individual, umm...and that you know he isn't your typical NBA basketball player

O: No

M: And umm...he's different

O: Cutting edge

M: Cutting edge

O: Cutting edge

M: Yeah

O: Kinda out there

M: Original, uh... he has his own style

O: Crazy

M: Crazy

O: Crazy, yeah

M: Certifiable, umm... [laughing]

O: Did any of you friends 'cause you I know you have M:

He's also a great athlete and he has you know he's crazy but he has a really funny sense of humor. I mean

O: I know that you surround yourself you were saying this to us earlier by you surround youself people who care about you

M:Yeah

O: So were there people who cared about you who said this is not a good idea? [laughing]

M: I-I think I think I had a momentary lapse of sanity. Yeah but thats happened before.

O: Right [laughing]

O: So you do what you want to do

M: Well I mean look I only dated him for two months its not like you know we you know we were living together or engaded or something

O: He said you wanted his baby

M: Really?

O: Mm..Hmm thats what he said

M: Well, ummm... He's Lying

O: He's Lying

M: Yeah

O: No have you see him

M: I only dated him for two months, I mean

O: Have you seen him or talked to him since he betrayed you?

M: No

O: And it was betrayal

M: Absolutely, yeah

O: And I would think that with all thats been written and said about it that whatever you all had at least you probably thought that you had a friend who wouldn't betray you.

M: I thought he was my friend, yeah

O: And you feel now that you could never be friends because he says he would like to apologize.

M: Really?

O: Uh-huh, I read that

M: Well, he better crawl from here to China [applause]

O: O.k. and that ends our Dennis Rodman Discussion. Uh.... Its been written over and over that you have once said over and over that you once said Sean Penn was the love of your life, is that still true?

M: No, my daughter is the love of my life [applause]

O: Good answer

M: And I was just wondering when are you and Stedman gonna get married?

O: Oh man!! [applause]

M: I had to!

O: O.k. about the same time you and Carlos do. [laughing]

M: Hey, we could have a double wedding

O: We could!

M: Cool!

O: I hate that question

M: So do I

O: You hate that question too? o.k.

M: Yeah

O: So it's not happenin for you any time soon?

M: uhuh, no. You?

O: Same here [laughing, applause] ...You know why I hate that question, it's like I don't know why people ask that question, its like your not validated unless you are

M: Until your married

O: Until your married

M: Until you spend thousands and thousands of dollars on a wedding, and get rice thrown at you

O: Yeah, and I think what people want is the wedding. Yeah, they want the wedding, they want the doves to fly they want, I think that

M: I think, I thought you know

O: Is that what y'all wanna see a wedding? [Yeah!!! - audience] ....I don't know what it is?

M: I think weddings, I think weddings are for everybody else, I think you know for the family and

O: What do you want to tell us about Carlos? since you led us into this discussion

M: I have not

O: No really but what do [laughing]

M: What do you want to tell us about Stedman? [laughing]

O: Not very much today. No really do you wanna share anything, you know

M: Umm...he uh... he makes great turkey burgers

O: Is he good with the baby?

M: He's incredible

O: Being a good papa

M: Wonderful, yeah. Sometimes he puts her diapers on backwards, it o.k.

O: He's lovin the whole papa thing

M: Yeah

O: Is he jealous of you, is he, does he get angry if you know ,does he, does your independence and assertevness or whatever does that bother him in any way, does he feel like he's living in the shadow of Madonna?

M: No I mean I think he knew what he was getting into when he umm...rang my doorbell. [laughing, applause]

O: So to speak

M: Yeah

O: So he handles the whole thing, doesn't bother him at all

M: He does very well with it.

O: When come back were gonna talk about...

M: Stedman!

O: No were gonna talk about Antonio Banderas!

****Commercial****

O: So you know there was all this speculation when Antonio Banderas and you were gonna be in the same film and I'm sure, o.k. Everyone talked about that

M: Yup

O: Did you still have a little-teeny-tiny crush on him?

M: Little-teeny-tiny?

O: Yeah

M: Umm... Well the thing is that, is that when I was talking about him in Truth or Dare I hadn't meet him yet. Then I meet him and then I had this big crush on him.

O: When you mentioned him in Truth or Dare nobody knew who he was, really

M: Hello?

O: Yeah [laughing] ...Thank you

M: Yes, well and then I got, and then umm... what happened is the- about four years ago I was gonna do Evita. This is the second incarnation of-of Evita, umm... and I was hired and he was hired to play Che. And uh... we got to know each other there and we had dinner, we had rehearsal, we talked about the movie. And I sort of became his friend, I mean he was married and I got to know his wife, I respected the fact that he was married and umm... so when we got to working on the movie again finally it was so far beyond that. I still think he's handsome and talented and all of those things but umm... I don't have a crush on him anymore.

O: You didn't have a crush on him during the film at all

M: No

O: And so when your doing

M: Well I mean you know I mean, I think its good to, I had a crush on Jonathan Price too I mean he, I think you really have to like your co-star it helps. You don't have to, o.k. but it helps. And I was really found of Jimmy Nail, Jonathan Price and Antonio.

O: Oh, in Vanity Fair I think you used a quote you said "Everybody knows its ridiculous because I wouldn't date a man that wears cowboy boots"

M: This is true [laughing]

O: Did he wear cowboy boots a lot?

M: Did he? uh-huh

O: A lot. One of the things that struck me umm.. that I read what you said that if you had known that you were gonna be so universally misunderstood you might have done some things diffrently, I'm you know paraphrazing the quote. But what do you think has been the most misunderstood?

M: I think-I think probably the biggest misunderstanding people have of me is what people have of most celebrities and that is that we aren't human beings and that it's o.k. to say the things that people say because we won't feel them because we don't have feelings, you know. I think that sort of covers everything because if people did think of me as a human being and did think of me as a person who had feelings, I don't think people would say or assume a lot of the things that they do. umm...

O: Yeah, I don't wanna bring up Denis Rodman again but I'm going to because I think, I think

M: I wish you wouldn't

O: Let me just say this, I think because you had done the Sex book

M: Yeah

O: The perception was well, the perception was well why should she care what he says about their sex life because she did that whole Sex book

M: O.k. first of all what he said was untrue fine but second of all my Sex book was a collection of fantasies, it had nothing to do with anybody else. It was me, it was my fantasies I didn't involve anyone else and I never once said it was the truth it was a fact this really happened. So umm... I really don't see how one has to do with the other.

O: I understand what your saying but I'm just saying that because you have been umm... so provacative, I would assume that, that's why a lot of people make the assumption that you wouldn't care about someone betraying you.

M: Well, their wrong

O: Yes and they're wrong

M: Yes

O: Does negative press still hurt your feelings?

M: Yes

O: It does, Intresting. I thought it was interesting because you were talking about how the paparatzi when their doing the tabloid things and this is true when their doing a negative, do y'all notice this? When there is a bad story of you they find the worst picture. With the most you know, I see pictures of me when you say you know they got a thousand pictures of you and they pick the ugliest most distorted, you got spaghetti hangin out your nose or whatever to put and thats all very contrived they know exactly what their doing but I found interesting cause you said they do that just to torture you and when I read that I thought, their not doing it to torture you, it has nothing to do with you my friend Miya Angelou

M: Well I know but it feels like it

O: Its torturing you

M: Yeah

O: Really?

M: It is well who wants to see a horrible picture of themselves in every supermarket

O: I know but the pictures is there not because the person who puts the picture there doesn't say I'm gonna put this picture here and this is really gonna tick Madonna off, it's about selling, it's about whatever is going to sell the newspaper.

M: I know

O: You know that

M: I know

O: But it still bothers you?

M: Yeah

O: And do you find this, this is happens to me, just when I've said I'm not gonna be bothered by it, it doesn't bother me anymore I'm 42 I've grown outta that, it's over I'm not gonna be disturbed. Then something will come up, like just recently in the paper there was a big thing that said Oprah hates Rosie. And I was really disturbed by that, really disturbed by it and I thought well do I now call Rosie and let her know that, that's not true and that I never said that. Does Rosie, is she in it enough to know that people make up lies about you, you know what I'm saying?

M: Yeah, it's horrible when they involve other people because suddenly you feel like I've been quoted many times saying, supposevly saying nasty things about other people that I didn't say. And then I think well do I acknowledge that

O: Should I call up those people

M: And say I didn't say it or just ignore it or what? It's umm... very disturbing

O: It is disturbing

M: Yeah

O: Yeah, and I don't hate Rosie I really love Rosie, I watched Tom Cruise on Rosie myself the other day [cheers from audience]

M: And I don't hate Rosie O: And I know you don't hate Rosie either [laughing]

O: Are you and Rosie best friends? I heard Rosie, well, Rosie, I watched Rosie, Rosie said she was at your house for Thanksgiving.

M: She came to my house for Thanksgiving and she took my daughter away from me and wouldn't give her back to me [laughing]

O: Really? Really were there lots of friends at the house?

M: Yeah there was mostly there was her son [laughing]

M: Everywhere

O: Really?

M: Yeah

O: He's at that age

M: Yeah

O: Where he's everywhere

M: Yup tie down the furniture

O: Really

M: Yeah

O: Do you have lots of girlfriends? Are you a good girl friend?

M: Yeah, I am

O: Really

M: I don't have lots of them, I have a handful of really good girl friends yeah and I cherish them

O: Really, they are the first people you told about the pregnancy

M: Umm...No

O: Your Dad was

M: No, no I-I, well the first person I told was Carlos [applause]

O: And we'll be right back. back in a minute.

****Commercial****

O: Madonna's trying to talk me into having a baby, Madonna's is trying to talk me into having a baby. [applause]

O: I'm tell her I don't have the time, I don't have the time!

M: You'll make the time

O: And the patience, you know I think it's really great. Like I saw you're baby, she's dressed to kill, uhh... two months old and when other babies come to visit. I think I'm a great aunt and godmother.

M: But you'll be a better mother because it's yours [applause] ...If you have nothing, I mean you know how you

O: Did you know it see, See there are women who always knew. And I have a feeling your one of those women who always knew, you always wanted to, you always had that yearning.

M: Yeah

O: You did, See I haven't had it I don't know if I would have what it takes to be the kind of mother that you need to be. 'Cause if I just believe, I've said this for years it is the hardest job on earth, for people who do it right.

M: It is [applause]

O: Hardest job on earth

M: It is the hardest but, but it is absolutely the most rewarding.

O: Already in two months? two months

M: Two months

O: When did you start to feel it like when did the

M: When I first laid eyes on her

O: Really?

M: Yeah

O: And you weren't one of those women who thought let me do this all naturally and just kind of breath through it. You wanted, you did it the epidermal thing didn't you?

M: Yeah, I tried to for eight hours

O: And then

M: And then I said give me the drugs [laughing]

O: Give me the drugs she'll be o.k.

M: Yeah

O: So it-it, I was saying where does the patcience come from, 'cause you weren't ordinarily a patcient person.

M: I-it-no but it just, I mean I think that it's instinctual. When you have your child in your arms nothing comes before she does or he does. And-and it just happens, you have, you'll get that patcience it will just come.

O: But o.k.
